
Dr. Gamaldo is a double-boarded sleep neurologist with research interests in studying the impact of sleep on manifestation and progression of neurological diseases. Her research activities have relied heavily on the interdisciplinary and interprofessional collaborative model for conducting sleep research utilizing the efforts of a diverse group of collaborators and, as a result has led to ongoing and evolving research projects that now include a growing list of collaborators (Neurology, OB/Gyn, Psychiatry, Urology, School of Nursing and Public Health, JH BME along with the NIA). As a member of the editorial board for the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) scoring manual for 6 years, she has played a role in maintaining and establishing the national guidelines for sleep procedural scoring. As a sleep neurologist, she is also uniquely capable of consulting on this grant with expertise in the scoring and interpretation of sleep EEG patterns and interpretation, which will be integral to the protocol of this study looking at the impact of opioid use on the relevant factors of both clinical and neurobiological aspects of sleep. As an active and long-term collaborative partner with the investigative team, she will remain involved throughout the research design, execution, and scholarship development process. Through her affiliation with the school of public health, her work as a leader in raising awareness of sleep and overall health in the general public and health education arena and her work evaluating the relationship between sleep and the manifestation of neurobiological and behavioral health.
